The Southern Quill, Utah Tech's literary arts publication, seeks currently enrolled UT students for the openings listed below. All editors are required to enroll in ENGL-3890 (Journal Publication/Southern Quill for 3 credit hours) in the Spring 2025 semester.
Managing Editor
Layout/Design Specialist
Poetry Editor
Fiction Editor
Creative Nonfiction Editor
Visual Arts Editor
Editors may be eligible for scholarships
· Assist with recruitment of Assistant Editors for all genres
· Assist with recruitment of Readers for all genres
· Assist with soliciting submissions in all genres
· Review and revise (as needed) the submission guidelines in all genres (Submittable)
· Assist with reading and evaluating submissions in all genres (as needed)
· Review and revise (as needed) the evaluation criteria for all genres (Submittable evaluation form)
· Manage SQ staff, Editors, Assistant Editors, and Readers (insure they complete submission evaluations weekly and other tasks)
· Assist with creating weekly meeting agenda
· Assist with conducting weekly SQ meetings
· Assist Faculty Editor (as needed)
· Review and revise (as needed) acceptance and rejection letters, publication contracts, etc. (as needed)
· Communicate with contributors and submitters (send acceptances, publication contracts, rejections)
· Assist staff with proofing/copy editing work accepted for publication (grammar, punctuation, spelling, mechanics, and minor content edits)
Other Duties (as needed):
· Promote Southern Quill Events and activities via social media, SQ campus table, flyer distribution, etc.
· SQ website updates (especially News tab)
· Take photos of events
· Input on the aesthetic/look/feel of the journal—assist with journal layout and design
· Update/edit various documents: solicitation letters/email for donations, thank you letters, acceptance and rejections letters, invitations to SQ events, event flyers, event programs, etc.)
· Assist with the sales and distribution of the journal, contributor copies, etc.
· Research ways to help increase overall visibility, funding, and circulation
Genre Editor Duties:
· Assist with recruitment of Assistant Editor for your genre
· Assist with recruitment of readers for your genre
· Assist with soliciting submissions in your genre (and general submissions)
· Review and revise (as needed) the submission guidelines in your genre (Submittable)
· Read and evaluate submissions in your genre
· Distribute submissions in your genre to readers
· Review and revise (as needed) the evaluation criteria for your genre (Submittable evaluation form)

Visual Arts Editor:
· Publicize the Dean's Award for visual art
· Nominate submissions from UT students for Dean's Award
This position requires experience using Adobe InDesign.
The Layout/Design Specialist's primary responsibility is laying out and designing the 2023 issue.
Other duties include:
Collaborating with student staff as well as with ImagePro, our printer
Graphic- and web design for the SQ website, flyers, stickers, t-shirts, etc. (as needed)
Time management skills and detail-orientation a must.
